Application for affiliation to tire union was granted the P.W.D. Rugby Football Club, which notified its intontion of fielding one senior and one junior teatn. It was decided to make arrangements with the Now Zealand union concerning the annual grant of £2O to the Poverty Bay Primary Schools’ Association. Negotiations have been made for visits to Gisborne .by the Auckland and Manawhenua Rugby representative teams, and the chairman was empowered to finalise arrangements with the respective delegates during his visit this week to the annual meeting of the New Zealand union in Wellington. The Bay of Plenty union wrote accepting the Poverty Bay union’s offer toiplay here on the King’s Birthday. It was agreed to notify all clubs that nominations close next Saturday for 'the senior, junior, and third grade competitions. ' Mr. G. J. Jeune was appointed de-puty-chairman for the ensuing year. Permission was granted the Old Boys’ Ulub to send a senior team to Bartlett’s (Kopua) next Saturday to play the newly-formed P.W.D. team. The grounds committee was* elected as follows: Messrs. D. Dansey, A. Ingram, P. C. Edmondson, and M. J. Kyne. Mr. J. French was appointed the P.W.D. Club’s vice-president to the Poverty Bay Rugby Union.

CARETAKER OF OVAL The question of whether the union should support the Board of Control’s proposal to maintain the services of Mr. M. Guthrie as caretaker of the Oval throughout the year, t/hus I relinquishing with (the services of Mr. P. Martin, who Bias had charge of the grounds during the winter months for a number of years, was discussed at ' some length last evening. After the matter had been considered from all angles, it was agreed to support the proposal. Mr. G. J. Jeune stated that at a

meeting of the Board, of Central of the Oval it was thought that it would be in the in the interests of the union if the caretaker, Mr: Guthrie, appointed by the Poverty Bay Cricket Association be maintained during the

Rugby season. This, said Mr. Jeune, would necessitate doing away with the services of Mr. Martin, but

at Mu' same time he felt the union would be acting wisely if it accepted the suggestion. He had visited the Oval last week and was greatly impressed with the improvements which had been made during the summer. Furthermore, he had been told that Mr. Guthrie intended establishing a turf nursery in one corner of the ground, and would treat, the playing areas accordingly to their requirements. Mr. Ingram said lie saw no reason why the. union shoulld relinquish with the services of Mr. Martin, who had given 'every satisfaction in the past. Mr. Jeune explained that Mr Guthrie was an experienced man at that class of work, and had been appointed from 20 applications fo take care of the Oval during the cricket season. In order to enable him to plan his topdressing months ahead, a caretaker should have charge ot' a ground year in and year out, added Mr. Jeune. Mr. 11. Hunter declared that if Mr. Martin' had given good services the union should retain him, and moved iu that direction. Mr. Ingram seconded the motion. • Mr. Jeuue moved an amendment that the action of the Board of Control be ratified. On a showing of hands, Mr. .leune’s amendment was carried by six votes to two. On the motion of Mr. 11. Berthelsen, it was decided that in the event of any additional work to be done about flic grounds Mr. Martin’s services be employed.
