SEAT RETAINED BY LABOR LONDON, Fob. 7. The by-election of the Brightside seat in Sheffield owing to Mr. A. A. W. H. Ponsonby’s elevation to the peerage, resulted as follows Marshall (Labor) 11,545 Ilamar Russell (Conservative) ... 8,612 W. A. Lambert (Liberal) 3,650 J, Murphy (Communist) 1,084 The last-named forfeited his deposit. At the ihy-eloction in May of last year, the result of tho voting was as follows: — A. A. W. IT. Ponsorihy (Labor) 20,277 Commander R 1. Money (Con.) 9,828 W. A. Lambert (Liberal) 6,612 Mr Ponsonby, Under-Secretary fbr tho Dominions, was Under-Secretary tor Foreign Affairs in the previous Labor Government. Originally a Liberal, he was private secretary to Sir H. Camp-bell-Bannerman from 1905 to 1908. _ He bad represented the Brightside division as Labor member since 1922.
