WELLINGTON'S CARILLON
N.Z.'LADY AS PLAYER (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) LONDON, Dec. 25. There are only three women carilloncrs in Britain. One is Miss Gladys Watkins, of Wellington, who also is the only New Zealnnder. Who is playing Christmas carols on '2?< of the bells for the Wellington War Memorial carillon in Hyde Park. It is hoped to have the complete range of .1(1 bells ready by January 1, for a try-out in Hyde Park before shipment to Wellington. Miss Watkins, who has been studying for a year at the famous carillon school in Malines, Belgium, will be the carilloner when, the memorial is erected in Wellington. In a preliminary recital Miss Watkins received a warm ovation from large crowds of shoppers on Christmas Eve. The police had to clear the way for Miss Watkins through the mass of appreciative listeners.
