FUTURE PROSPECTS A SINISTER INCIDENT ""~~~" (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCIIIJRCH, this day. Black Duke disappointed an army of southerners when ho failed to make any showing in the Winter Cup. Tie certainly was slow at moving off, but even in the face of this he was expected to do better. [le was produced in splendid order, and may make amends before the meeting closes. Cay Sonnet evidently benefited by the strenuous preparation she had for the Winter Cup engagement, and n win for her is probable during the remainder of the fixture. She was scut out 15th favorite yesterday, but is certain to occupy a much higher place in the public estimation in her next effort. Kniti was strongly fancied for the Winter Cup, but wax never in a winning position. He stumbled badly shortly after the start, but had a good passage afterwards, and there was little excuse for his failure. Kaiti's chances apparently caused concern in gome quarters, as n deliberate attempt was made by two individuals after the Grand National Steeplechase to tamper with, the horse while he was being.led round the paddock, and his attendant had difficulty in warding off the intruders, who eventually decamped without being able to carry out their mission. There were many disquieting rumors on and off the course yesterday regarding a steeplechaser, and if it should prove to have any foundation some interesting developments can be expected.
