BENEFIT DANCE (Herald Correspondent.) So great was the late Mr. George Davidson's popularity and so great was the sympathy felt for his young wife and family that the residents of Te Araroa and the surrounding district lost no time in showing their sympathy in p. practical manner. A benefit dance was held in Te Araroa Hall on Thursday nighrj fan,d was w'ell attended. Mr. Wharau Whenua was M. 0., while Mrs. Jiammerton's orchestra provided the music,- and Messrs. J. Brown and Hockley played extras. Mr. Hockley also sang a" solo. The ladies provided a good hand-round supper. During the evening Mr. Earnshaw thanked thos? who had attended, helping to make the evening sucli a success; he also praised and thanked Messrs. Charlie PUha and Gill for their gallant attempt at rescue—the former* for rescuing Mr. Gill. Mr. Earnshaw mentioned also'the crew of the boat who materially helped to recover Mr. Davidson's body. Mr. Earnshaw went on to say the gallant conduct of Messrs. Puha and ■Gill deserved recognition in some suitable manner and the promoters of the dance had thought to present each with a gold watch at some future date. Mr. Jackson expressed sorrow for the loss of Mr. Davidson, who had endeared himself to all who knew him, and he expressed the sympathy of the community with the bereaved family. He announced that the committee who organisedvthe benefit, had received the substantial sum of £65.
