The only money one makes is by training winners and betting on them," declared Richard Emerson, a retired horse trainer, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Emerson, as a destituto person, applied for a maintenance order against his sons, William Henry Emerson and Charles R. Emerson. Mr. Connal, who appeared for tho defendants, asked complainant whether it was a fact that ho had trained 131 or 14 horses at ope time. Tho complainant: No. Only eight or nine. "You are a good trainer?" asked Mr. Connal. Complainant: Well, I did my best. Mr. Connal: You should have made from £lO to £l2 a week. "What about the feed and paying the boys," replied the complainant. "There's no profit in it unless one trains winner? and backs them." Mr. Connal: Have you been betting verv heavilv? "I've had nothing to bet with," was the reply. The complainant admitted his son Charles had been good to him, and had given him £lO on one occasion. Mr. Connal said the net income o f the-defendant Charles was about £5(!0 a year. An order for 10s a week was made against William Emerson and an order for 30s a week against Charles Emerson.
