WOMEN'S REST

SERVICE TO COMMUNITY

In regard to the movement for the establishment of a Women's Rest in Gisborne, the following letter has linen received hv Miss A. L. Rees from the Mayor n'f 'listings, Mr. 0, A. Maddi .son : "Dear madam: I was very pleased to receive your letter of the 15th inst. and I hope your enthusiasm will eventually be rewarded in the establishment of a women's rest in keeping with the importance of your town. Personally I cannot speak too highly of the service which, such an institution gives to the community generally, and that opinion is shared by the whole population of this district. I feel certain that even although your council is retrenching, it would be very wise for them to proceed with the "Rest." It is a factor even in the ordinary business of the town.

•'Our 'Rest' cost, approximately £2OOO and part of this sum was given by different people, and the council provided a considerable portion of the material. The cost of furnishing was verv readily raised by community concerts. It is now a self-supporting institution, and even If it cost our boroiigh several hundreds a year to maintain it would be very readily granted by the council, who recognise as the representatives of the people,, what a very excellent and serviceable institution it is. My council is now considering a scheme for extensive additions to the 'Rest' and I am certain that such a scheme will bo approved by our ratepayers."
