MORE ASSISTANCE WANTED

Representations for additional assist ance to the Workers' Educational Asso ciation were made to the Minister o Education, Mr. P. A. Wright, am Minister of Internal Affairs, .Mr. R. F Bollard, to-day. by ;i strong deputation including several members of Parlia n.ent.

In reply, Mr. Wright said there was no controversy as to the need of educating every member of the community to the fullest, extent. The Government, with its grants and subsidies, was actually finding £6136 for the work of the association. Finance was undoubtedly a problem. His vole was attacked from the front, rear ami flank, and he bad to see that weaker ones got some, crumbs from the rich man's table. Technical schools and the Workers' Educational Association were alike in that they fried to get demands for new classes, but that, ma.de inroads* on (be money available. The line had to be drawn somewhere. It would be impossible for the country to allow classes to be formed on every conceivable subject. He admitted that .the association was doing valuable, work and that it was getting the support of the people who waaited to receive higher education. That was commendable and could not be overlooked. He would put the representations before Cabinet and state the position fullv himself. The balance sheet showed that some centres had got behind. . They could not expect, however, that Cabinet would be able to give them ali they wanted, Mr. Wright said. He agreed that whatever could be done to help the people in the country centres should be done.

Mr. Pollard promised that he woulc render what assistance he, could to gel more money for the association. If pos sible, he would get passed the. legislator they wanted to enable municipal bodie: to make grants to the association.
