Herhert White appeared on a charge of having sold liquor in a no-license area, ami a joint charge of having kept liquor for sale was preferred against him and his wife, Maltha Anne White. j In regard to the first charge, to j winch accused pleaded not guilty, a ! girl of to yave evidence. She said j she had made a statement to the con- j stable that she "had gone to accused's house, for whisky for a man named Hughes. She had made (he .statement j because she was afraid of Hughes. It; was not. true. | Claude. Henry Jackson Hughes gave evidence that he paid £2 to accused for liquor. ; Counsel : Don't you remember being put to bed that night? | Witness: WJiat. ' By him! He was' drunker than 1 was.—' (Sensation.) j Did you see any whisky there that night?—Did I? Of course' J did. According to my money 1 had £5 worth Didn't you go out for more whisky? --No, 1 did not. i Did you wander round the house. —No, I didn't. J)i<l you go to Mrs. NiehollV room? No. The Senior Sergeant protested against tins cross-examination. The Magistrate: It is to show how drunk the witness was. In regard to- the second charge, the police gave evidence as to finding liquor in White's house. Mrs. White denying knowledge of it. The Magistrate dismissed the charge against the woman, and fined the husband AllO Ids and costs, with 10 days in which to pay.
