During the debate in the House of Lords on the Local Option Bill, Lord Dawson, physician to the King, speaking in opposition to the measure, which, owing to its controversial nature, is not supported by the Government, said the increase in temperance was proceeding at an accelerated late. Crowing national sobriety was evidenced in statistics collected from a group of popular restaurants. Three years ago it was found that 75 per cent, of the customers drank no alcohol at, all, and of the remainder throe-quarters drank light wines or Leer, and one-quarter spirits or port. To-day similar evidence secured at one of the large restaurants showed that only 17 per cent, of the customers drank alcohol. Lord Dawson quoted from statistics iu support of his contention, and attributed increase in temperance to tho greater companionship of women and men, and the cultivation of physical litness which now applied io all classes and both sexes.
