SINGAPORE BASE.
GATEWAY BETWEEN TWO SEAS,
ADMIRAL SHOWS NECESSITY FOR DEFENCE. (Received March 1, 12.39 p.m.) PERTH, March 1. Admiral Field, replying to Dr. Earl Page’s speech, said that in time of war it would be necessary for the fleet to proceed in the shortest time to the point threatened, which may or may not be Australia. In these circumstances, it was necessary to have Singapore', which was tho gateway between tho two seas, so protected as to enable the fleet to have access through it. The Admiral added : “It is of little avail to consider whether or not- there should be a naval base at Singapore, for as long as Singapore is the gateway between tho two seas we must have fuel supplies there, and must be able to defend it against enemies; therefore if tho Singapore naval base only begins as an oil depot we must be prepared to defend it against all comers.”
