A prisoner named George Date, serving a sentence of five years in the local gaol, about 50 years of age, dropped dead this morning, when carrying water to the bathroom. Apparently heart trouble was the cause. Deceased was a single man, with no relatives in New Zealand. WELLINGTON, this day. The lighthouse-keeper at Pencarrow yesterday noticed an object like a man’s body floating off ihe heads. He informed the police, who found that it was a man’s body, which was brought to the morgue. Identification is practically impossible, owing to the advanced state of decomposition, but it is thought to be the body of one of the victims of the Omaha wreck. The appointment of Mr. P. D. M. Verschaffelt of the Public Trust Department, as Assistant Public Service Commissioner in place of Mr. F. V. Fraser, S.M., now president of the Arbitration Court, is announced. DUNEDIN, this day. As the contract with the Imperial Government regarding butter runs out on March 31, Dr. Reakes lias asked the Dominion Butter Committee to meet him at Wellington on March 10 to discuss proposals for the immediate future.
