WRECK OF SCHOONER.

(Per Press Association.) ,_ TT , AUCKLAND, last night. .Ehe Herald's Fiji correspondent states that the auxiliary four-masted schooner Defender is ashore, a total wreck, oni Nukuhocea reef, m the southern portion of Lav, or tlra Windward group of the I'iji islands. She is owned m America, and was bound for Levuka with a cargo of 480,000 feet of timber. The Defender struck a ,r«ef on April 10, antd within an hour her large boat ,had been smashed to match woool and three of her four masts had gone overboard. The crew reached the neighboring island m a dinghy. The news of the vessel s loss came as bad news to the colony, whioh is quite out of building timber.
