FOCH HAS NEW OFFENSIVE FRONT.
CAN STRIKE WHENEVER HE DESIRES.
GERMANS CANNOT HOLD LINES
LIGHTLY
lAustralian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Sept. 18, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, Sept, 17. General Maurice writes : General Fershing's victory has altered the whole character of the eastern front m. Fiance. Th© French., fighting on the Americans' left, have considerably progressed m the direction of Etain, therefore the front how runs one hundred miles m a straight lin,© m a south-easterly direction from north of Verdun to beyond Luneville. Generalissmo Foch can now make this new front an offensive front whenever he desires. The Germans are now obliged to actively defend, their direct railway communications between Metz and the ' north and . between Metz and Strassburg. More important still, they are obliged to , protect the invaluable Briey iron mnifes. Therefore the new front m the Woeuvre and Lorraine has become of the greatest importance to the enemy, and can .no-longer -be held lightly. . . •■ '
