STRONGLY-FORTIFIED POSITIONS CARRIED. (Reuter's Telegram.) PARIS, Sept. 17. The new R from the Woeuvre front is excellent. The Americans have gone beyond Avillers and Sosremy, and have reached Landres. The Americans carried a series of strongly-fortified positions m the tjirec- • tion 1 of Chambley. (Australian and N.Z. ' Renter's correspondent at American headquarters states : The Americans captured m Thiaucourt, Professor Otto Schmeerakase, exploiter of chlorine < gas for military purposes, and who reported developments as some new advocacy of kutture. Sir Douglas Haig, m a special order, congratulated General Pershing on the victory of the initial American offensive. He said : "Convey to all ranks our unbounded admiration and pleasure." ,1
