PATROL SHIPS AND SUB MARINES.
GERMAN ACCOUNT OF TORPEDO BOATS' ENCOUNTER. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received July 25, 12.40 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, July 24. A trawler reports witnessing an encounter between British patrol ships and two submarines off the Scottish coast. Subsequently five German destroyers were seen returning to Zeebrugge, two with a heavy list. The German Admiralty's communique states: German torpedo boats from Flanders carried out a raid towards the Thames Estuary. When returning they met several small British cruisers and destroyers. A brief gun duel took place. We scored some hits. Our boats returned undamaged. The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, July 24, 2.15 p.m. The Admiralty reports : On Saturday at- midnight near North Hinder lightship, some of our light forces sighted three enemy destroyed, who retired with no damage. Subsequently off.- Schouwnbank six enemy destroyers were engaged m a running fight. Tho enemy, who were repeatedly hit, succeeded m reaching the Belgian coast. i fine of our vessels. -was- hit once, 7 one officer and one man being slightly wounded.
