DESPERATE FIGHT FOR POZIERES.
FIGHTING ON WHOLE FRONT VERY INTENSE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received July 24, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, July 23. Sir Douglas > Haig reports that the battle has been resumed with intense violence over the entire Pozieres-Guille-mbnt fronfc . Territorials and Australians attacked respectively south-west, and south-east of Pozieres. The latter carried the outer German works. Violent fighting continues m the village, the Germans 1 resisting desperately and using many machine-guns. No definite progress can yet be rePorted at Pozieres. Elsewhere on the whole front fighting is equally intense. We captured the whole of Longueval m the morning, but the Germans retook the northern end, the. outskirts of Guillemont having twice changed hands.
