FIERCE FIGHTING ON FRIDAY.

HEAVY CAST7ALTTES ON BOTH SIDES. Received January 24 3 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 23. Official: General Aylmer attacked tho Turks at Essen on Friday. There was fierce fighting. The casualties were heavy on both sides. The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, Jan. 23, 3.50 p.m. A telegram from Sir Percy Lake, dated Saturday, states: General Aylmer attacked the Turkish position at Es Sin on Friday, fierce fighting continuing during the day with varying success. The weather throughout was atrocious, the pouring rain rendering the movement of the troops extremely difficult. Owing to the floods it was impossible to renew the attack on Saturday, General Aylmer taking up a position 1300 yards from the enemy's trenches. The weather continues very bad, with incessant rain, and floods increasing. No details of the casualties liave yet been received, but they are rreported to be veiy heavy on both sides.
