AUCKLAND, this day. At the inquest on the body of a newly-born child- a statement made' to the police by the mother of the child, Mary Agnes Brown, was put m. She stated that she r^vas single, 25 years of age. She admitted that she cave birth to a child. It was dead. She put it m a dress basket. The Coroner found that the deatJh of the child resulted from hemorrhage or exposure, owing, to the absence, of skilled assistance. Subsequently Ma.ry Brown was arrested, and charged with concealment of birth, and remanded on bail, with a surety of £25. ■*. Whitsoris nine-roomed residence, m George, street, was 'practically destroyed by fire this morning. The furniture was badly damaged. The valuable library was saved. Some of tho occupants had a narrow escape. The house was insured for £500 an- tlie contents for £600. • .
