At ithie i Magistrates' Court to-day judgment by default was given m the following undefended civil cases: — Edward Burte (Mr. Burke) -v. Tawa Porter, claim for £1 12s 6d with costs 18s ; Edgar Oeorge Stevens (Mr Blair) v., James- McKinley £15 Is 6d and costs £1 14s 6d ; Alfred Harry Oilman v. Eripa Kerekere £12 7s Id with £_ 17s costs ; Honor McCorma/;k v. William Poppleton £2 8s 6d and costs 10s
An, order was made for immediate payment oi the amounts m the following judgment summons cases :— Helen' Gartshore (Mri Burke) -v. E. -Morrow £1 5s lid, or two days imprisonment. An order for the payment . by monthly instalments of £1 was made by consent m vie case of Nicholls and Griffiths (Mr. Blair) v. Harry Hastings Capon (Mr J. Dawson), £7 10a 4d being due ; m default eight days' imprisonment. lii the case against J. P. Haughie, sawmiller, Rakauroa, who was sued by the New Zealand Insurance 06". (Mr. D. Hitchinjrs) for £46 ls 7d, defendant denied liability, and said' he had written to the clerk of the court regarding the matter. His Worship said he had niade enquiries, and no letter had been received. Mr. Hitchings said the case was v one m which leave to; < defend;, should not be granted, as . the defendant had had plenty? of time to. lodge a, notice of defence. He would agree! to permission to' defend being granted if defendant paid the amount into court. His Worship said if defendant -paid £30 into court before noon to-day^ ; permission to defend would be. granted, otherwise judgment #by default wpuld be' entered against Yiim. ■ ' ■
