SUBORDINATE NATIONHOOD.
LONDON, May 28. In a leading article on Empire Day the Times says "Mr Fisher describes the position of Australia m the Empire as on© of subordinate nationhood. That is an accurate description of her position to-day, and perhaps he is right m urging that as fa* as Australia is concerned that higher status is still beyond the mark tq which wise practical statesmanship should look. It is clear, however, that Canada, under the guidance of Mr Borden, is looking further still." Mr Fisher, Prime Minister of ' the Commonwealth, cabled an Empire Day message, m the course of which he said : "If annual Imperial conferences were held, and not always m London, the world would hear less of Empire dangers."
