OTAGO WINTER SHOW.
VALUE OF DAUIY PRODUCTS.
(Per Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, last night,
The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's winter siiow opened to-day m fine weather, and there was a splendid attendance. The entries m cheese were somewhat smaller than usual, but the quality /was excellent, the judges describing the exhibition as one of the finest ever held here, and one which would hold its own m any centre. There is a remarkable degree of uniformity m the body and texture of practically every exhibit. The judges awarded the maximum points for get-up and finish. The competition m creamery butter was very keen, and, m many cases, the judges had great difficulty m arriving at a decision.
The official opening was performed by the Hon. H. D. Bell, who, referring to the opening for our products m the markets of the world, said that only the other day he was talking to the greatest of London meat-sellers, who told him they fully anticipated the opening of Continental markets to the meat of this country. He believed, also, that there was great hope for the flax industiy. After referring to increasing exports of dairy produce to Canada and South Africa, Mr Bell said the value of dairy produce (butter and cheese) exported from New Zealand during the past year had exceeded by half a million the value of the dairy produce exported during the preceding year. The entries totalled 1297, as against 1393 last year, the falling-off being chiefly m grain, roots, and cheese, the bad season affecting the growth of roots, while the shortage of cheese is due primarily to the fact that a consider, able number of factories did not forward exhibits. The takings to-day totalled £333, as against £167 on the first day last year.
