LONG RUN WITH BATTERY GAR.

A journey of 310 miles from New York to Boston on the lines of the New York Cenrral and Hudson River and the Boston and Albany railroads hap been made by a new Beach-Edison storage battery car, which is to work m the suburban service of the latter road at Boston. The trip was interesting m that it demonstrated that a. self; propelled car of this type cpuld maintain high average speeds for distances consjderably over 100 miles. The route taken included a. long run on the level; the climbing of a. -high, range, and several curves. , The car is 50ft long overall, 12ft 6in high and Bft llin wide. It conforms to the M.U.B. equipment interchange specifications, and weighs, complete with the load.. 54.6 tons. Scats for 40 passengers are provided m the main compartment and for 10 more m the baggage compartment. On the,.Uial-run a. combined live and artificial load equivalent to 84 passengers was;, carried. , > The electrical equipment includes four 20 h.p. 220- volt motors and two sets of 230 storage battery cells delivering current to the mo- , tors at approximately 240 volts. The batteries were fully charged when the car left New York, and the run of 214 miles to Hudson was made at an average, schedule speed of 35 miles an hour. On arrival at Hudson the car climbed one and a-half, miies of 2 per cent, grade before being recharged. The energy consumption for' the level run of 114 miles over the main line of the New York Central was 37A' watts per . ton mile. The car arrived at Springfield, Mass., 98 mijes, frqm, Hudson,, with abo,ut one-third of the full charge m the batteries, after haying climbed the Berkshire Hills to an elevation of 1450 ft. and negotiated many graces, 'including a continuous 1 per cent, up grade for ejght miles. After receiving a, short boosting charge at Springfield, ,the car completed the remainder of the distance to Boston, 98* miles. ....^^_
