WANGANUI, this day. There was^ continued denudation of the bush on "the hillsides adjoining the Wanganui river by a large landslide on Sunday just below Atene. The earth on one hillside was soaked with rains, and being without buish to hold it up, slipped into the river, and piled up m the water to such an extent, as to reach more than half-way across. It was at first thought the obstruction would _ block the service, but the fear was groundless, though great care will require to be exercised m making the passage through the narrow lane left of swift-running water. Fortunately the river has already commenced to scour, and the obstruction is unlikely to be permanent. A large number of slips are reported on the hillsides m the back country. The roads are m a terrible state, the Ahua Ahua road m particular, many sections having slipped away.

A case m which a question of the class of offence m which probation, may be granted came before Mr Justice Cooper at the Supreme Court to-day. A young man, aged 19,. named Joseph Stanley, who had pleaded guilty at Wanganui to a charge of arson, setting fire to a haystack, was placed m the dock for sentence. Mr Justice Cooper said he had consulted the other judges, who agreed with him m the opinion he had expressed at Wanganvi that it was not a case for probation. The prisoner was of somewhat weak intellect, but knew the difference between right and wrong. Where a prisoner had deliberately set fire to property belonging to another person, and did so out of a motive of revenge, it was not m the interests of the public that that person should be allowed his liberty, without some period of disciplinary treatment. The prisoner was committed to Invercargill prison for disciplinary treatment and reformative purposes for a period not exceeding three years. • The Trotting Conference has elected the following officers : President, Mr John Rowe; vice-president, Mr H.
