TOTALISATOR COMMISSION.
(Per Pres. Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Giving evidence before the New South Wales Totalisator Commission, Mr Wtyyte-, secretary of the Wellington R.C., expressed the opinion that if double- betting by means of the totalisator had not ;been abolished, the bookmaker would r not be out of existence as such. Inspector Ellison said he considered the, toaalisator a far better system for the public than the bpokmaking system. Race crowds were more orderly where no, "books" existed. If the tote was a I double machine, it would ruin the bookmakers. ■ . i Mr Duncan, owner of the Waikanae stud., said he would at. once dispose- of his 1 stud if the totalisator were abolished. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds, in giving evidence before the Totalisator Commission, i opposed the totalisator, which, he said, gave added facilities for betting. Asked which lie would prefer, he said he would undoubtedly prefer the •book- • maker, as he would contribute less to the funds of the racing clubs. He said that to that extent the totalisator was «a greater promoter of racing and 1 betting 4b,e bookmaker.
