(Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. A fire occurred hero soon, after six o'clock tins morning, a four-roomed dwell, ing and shop m Rangitikei street being partially destroyed. The premises were occupied by J. K. Cohon as a genearl store. Tho insurance on the stock, which was greatly damaged by smoke and water, was £250 m the Commercial Union office. The building wa6 insured for £200 m the United office. Cohen accounts for the outbreak by saying that on Sunday night last he was robbed of £15, and thereforekept a candle burning by his bedside all night. The curtain became ignited, but he does not knpw how. Jolui Moughaii and Susan Cole, who were committed for trial by the S.M. yes. j terday m connection with the alleged illegal operation, and by him refused bail, appealed to Mr Justice Chapman this morning to be allowed bail, on the ground that there was no reason why they should be detained until the trial, which takes place early m March next. His Honor reserved his decision. WELLINGTON, this day. Kay and John Davey, theft, two yeans. HOKITIKA, this day. The wife of J. B. Lewis, President of , the Westland Law Society, died last night after a protracted illness. ASHBURTON, this day. The Magistrate, Mr Wray, convicted Arthur Madden on a charge of keeping : • liquor for sale, and fined him £50 and ; costs. The liquor seized was also order- . Ed to be forfeited.
