THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.

-»- AN IMPROVED CONNECTION PROBABLE. (Special to Herald.) DUNEDIN, this day. While m Ottawa Mr Jas. Mills had an interview with Mr Cartwright, Canadian Minister for Trade and Commerce, and laid before liim the Union Company's proposals regarding the Vancouver service. Mr Mills is hopeful that these proposals will form the basis of an improved service m the near future. This improvement had had its first stage repaired by inauguration of the running of fast Atlantic liners, the Empress of Britain and Empress of Ireland, which had only started running from Britain to Canada this season. This fast service and the use of the Canadion-Pucific railway lines, plus an improved line of steamers lrom Vancouver to colonial waters should help to settle the present complaint. I Concerning Cunadian sentiment, Mr Mills says there is undoubted and.genuine feeling m the great Dominion m . favor of a close friendly connection with the Australasian colonies. Canada was growing more prosperous than ever. Settlement was going farther and farther back, and new and rich wheat growing country was being opened up. There had been further discoveries of rich mineral fields. The people of Britain and Ireland were still flocking m crowds into Canada, and Americans also were crossing tlie borders m great numbers.
