RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

THE INAUGURAL MEETING. The recently formed Poverty Bay Rifle Association held its initial meeting at Makauri range yesterday. There was a large attendance, some 48 competitors beingS present, and during the clay the range was visited by a considerable number of people interested in shooting. Major \V inter was in charge of the proceedings, with Captains Colebourne, Beere, and Cowan assisting as range oflicers. There were four targets in use, and the shooting was got oft in good system without a hitch. The marking, supervised by Quartermaster-Sergeant Zachariah and Captain Cowan, was prompt and satisfactory. Amongst the visitors to the range were Colonel Porter, Major McCredie and Captain Sautmann. The aggregate prize for the day was won by Corporal Breingan, of the Gisbovne Rifles, it being a handsome salad bowl presented by Captain Tucker. Private Rait, of the Gisborne Rifles, was runnerup. Un presenting the trophy Major Winter expressed, his pleasure at the formation of the Association and the suitable' manner in which everything had gone off at the opening meeting. iie commended the Association as being one well worthy of the support of the citizens of Gisborne and district. Mr C. Hellier Evans olficiated as secretary to the meeting, which entailed a consider- ; able burden of work, and he will attend at the Masonic Hotel this evening for the purpose of distributing the prize money.
