SWIMMING BATH.

At a special meeting of the Gisborne School Committee, held on April 6th, it was decided to build a bath in the school grounds, for the purpose of enabling the* pupils attending the school to acquire the art of swimming. Messrs Church, Colley, Rowley, and Wauchop, who were appointed «, bath committee to go into the question of ways and means, held their first meeting on. Thursday last. Mr Rowley was appointed chairman and treasurer, and Mr Wauchop secretary. It was decided to hold a monster social early in June, as the first step to raise the necessary funds, and to call a meeting of those willing bo help for Thursday, April 20th. In order that tlie public, on whose liberality the whole success of the movoment^depends, may rest assured that they, aa well as the children, will be direct gainere, it was decided tu recommend the School Committee to adopt a scheme for the control of public bathing similar to those in operation in connection with scliool baths in Canterbury. This provides for the management of the bath during the hours of public bathing being under the control of a properly or. ganised Swimming Club, such club to charge its members an annual subscription, two-thirds of Vhich will go to tlie School Committee, to be used by them, solely for the purposes of upkeep and encouragement of snvimming among tlie school children. The hours of public bathing will be fixed by the Scliool Committee. . By the adoption of- such a scheme the public will have quite as ready -access* to the bath as if it were under municipal or any other control. The Committee decided to communicate with the Minister of Education, asking if any help could be relied upon from liis department, and, also to ask for concessions from the Public Works and Railway Departments in. the matter of obtaining shingle for the concreting from Kaitaratahi. Letters will also be sent to local bodies and athletic clubs asking for their support. It is thought that most of the work of excavating might be done by free, labor,, and the Committee feel sure that', if the people of Gisbome will give the same -support to this as they lmvei done to similar movements in the past, a bath will be ready for filling when the water supply is an accomplished fact.
