AUCKLAND, this day. A largely attended meeting of the Liberal and Labour Federation accepted the resignation of Mr George F. Gray, organiser, Who expressed regret at having to retire from the position. He had not been able to work harmoniously with the general secretary, and was too loyal to his party to see disruption brought aboiit. He had forwarded his resignation to the Premier and Executive, and it had been accepted. The branch accepted the resignation with regret and acknowledgment of the good work done by Mr Gray. The Star's Raratonga correspondent writes: Reports to hand from the north, em islands show that leprosy is making headway in the Islands of Manihikia, Rakahanca, and Penryn, wliile at Palmerston Island there is one suspicious case — a boy. To safeguard the rejridents, the Commissioner, has issued an order prohibiting, under heavy penalties, the introduction to Cook Islands, by the master, of. any vessel, of a person known to be,- or suspected of being, leprous. WELLINGTON, (this day. A youth named' John Curlctt, aged 15 yeans, pleaded guilty to the theft of a letter containing money, and was -remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused was eugaged as runner between the Money Order Office and the Chief Post Office, and it was his duty to •clear the Money Order Office posting boxes. During the month several letters posted there liad gone astray, and a test letter was. posted, with £1 enclosed. Tliis accused took, and on arrest admitted taking the other letters, but as they Contained no money hie destroyed them. HOKITIKA, this day. A lengthy enquiry was held yesterday at Kumara into the cause of the recent boiler explosion at the Junction,' whereby three men met their deaths. The verdict was jan accidental explosion,' lio blame being attachable to anyone, all reasonable precautions having been taken. The jury recommended that an inspector for maclunery be stationed at Hokitika or Greymouth; to enable a more frequent inspection, of machinery to be made. DUNEDIN, this day. An Easter camp, under the auspices of the New Zealand Presbyterian Young Men's Bible Class Union, has been successfully opened. Over 300 young men from all parts of the colony are under canvas at l'ahuna Park. The weather is, superb. The Conference opened with a paper by Mr G. A* Troup, of Wellington, on "Work for voung men." An animated discussion followed. The Rev. D. Borrie, Moderator of 'the Presbyterian General Assembly, welcomed the visiting delegates to Dunedin. The Rev. W. Hewitson 6poke, and other ministers took part. GORE, this day. The Gore-Waikaka Railway Finance Company, the formation Of which was authorised by special Act last session. for the purpose of financing the construction of a branch lino of railway, 'twelve miles in. length, between Gore and Walkaka, as was done in the case of the PaeroaWailii lins, has been registered. An active canvass is to be made throughout the district to dispose of the balance of the shares, after- which the Company will take up fifty thousand pounds of Government debentures, and the Government with the cash from .the sale of the debentures will construct the' line. No great delay in reaching the stage of commencement is anticipated.
