WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present : Messrs Slierwood (Chairman), Wallis, Knox, A. 15. Williams, and T. S. Williams. A telegram was received from the Lands Surveyor, Napier, stating that the specifications for the expenditure of the Tauwharaeparae Crown Lands grunt had been approved. — Received. A letter from the Lands Department, Napier, stating that Mr George Powell's rent had been paid for survey fee, and no land revenue would accrue until that was exhausted. — Received. A letter was received from Dr McGregor, Inspector-General of Hospitals, m reply to a- communication from the Council with reference to the necessity of a hospital m tlie district, and stating that the matetr would receive consideration. — Received. A letter was received from the Marine Department stating that the suggestion to appoint a member of the Qouneil to the Gisborne Harbor Board would be. considered when the appointments were being made.-— Received. A telegram was received from Mr A. T, Ngata stating that the Council's proposal to collect both the European and Native dog tax for the ensuing year had been agreed to by the Maori Council. — Agreed. " • The Secretary of the Treasury wrote, applying for payment of £210 13s 4d for arrears of interest on special loan. — Received. The Cliief Surveyor, Napier, wrote acknowledging the application of the Council to iliiwe the Ahikoura No. 1 block specified for a recreation reserve. The Commisisoner of Crown Lands wrote stating that the proposal for the expenditure of £89 8s Id acrued land revenue had been approved of. — Received. A letter was received from Mr D. N. McMillan, road surveyor, ' covering the approved specifications for the HikuwaiPakariki road. — Received. A letter was received from the Secretary to the Treasury Department, stating that grants should be spent on permanent work, and not for ordinary repairs. — Received. A letter was received from Mr A. F. Kennedy, informing the Council that Mr Wallis had been appointed a member of the Board of Hospital Trustees. — Received. A letter was received from Mr Witty, secretary of the Gisborne Harbor Board, requesting to be supplied with the roll of electors entitled to vote at the forthcoming Board election.— lt was decided to reply tliat the roll forwarded by Mr Witty did not apply to the Waiapu County, and suggesting that the Harbor Board should have the required information compiled at their own expense. Tlie Engineer's report dealing with work was then read, after which the Council went into committee to open tenders. — T. S. McCracken's tender was accepted for contract No. 13, and McNeill and Son's for No. 14. Cr A. B. Williams asked when the Engineer would be able to lay out the work on Pauterokia. — 'flic Engineer said that the work was second on his list, and would be gone on with when works required on the Pakiakani track had been laid out. Cr A. B. Williams said that it would be advisable to get the scrub on the Puki-tiki-Tariki track burned, as the season was favorable for that being done. — Cr Williams to attend to the matter. __ Cr A. B. Williams proposed that the Engineer be instructed to drain the slips m the Waipiro stream valley as soon as arrangements for the purpose could be made. — Carried. Cr Kno proposed that the- road, near the Sea View Hotel be repaired.—Carried. The Chairman proposed that the Ihun-gia-Horehore track be formed, the cost to be defrayed out of the land i-evenue, and any deficiency to be charged to the Waiapu riding. — Carried. On the motion of the Chairman, Mr Win. McElroy was appointed registrar of dogs.
