LAND BOARD

A meetini; of the Hawke's Bay Land Board was held this morning in the Latid office. Present : The Chief Commissioner (Mr E. C. Goldsmith) and Messrs Matthe.wson and Hall. Mr Jas. Bright on behalf of Mr R. Craill applied to purchase the freehold of section 113 block 11, and sections 122 and 123 of block 11, Patutahi district. The total area amounted to 1296 acres 3 roods. The application was granted. The Commissioner stated thattbere were two cases to come before the Board in which the rents of certain sections were in arrears. One of these was that of Robert McCulloch who occupied sections I and II Block V and 5 and 9 Block VII, Motu, and was in arrears with his payment since Ist July 1597. The area in question was 800 acres and the annual rent £23. The improvements on 2Slh August, 1596, were 65 acres in grass at £2, £130, and compulsory improvements, £80. Mr Matthewson said the tenant was not at present- a resident of the district. It was decided to write to Mr McCullough asking him to show reason why the sections should not be forfeited. In the other case, that of G F. Bell, who occupied section 3 block VIII, Waimata, there were two payments in arrear, the amount due being £14 10s. The improvements required were set down at £14 10s, and effected £"•5 10s. It was decided to write to the occupier pointiuj; out that the sections were both to be forfeited if the rent was not at once paid.

The Assistant Surveyor-General wrote from Wellington forwarding for the consideration of the Board a letter from Thomas Caldwcll, of Hauiti, in which he asked that a road should be taken through Mr James Macfarlane's Takapau block, in the Uawa survey district.— lt was decided to recommend that the road be formed, the applicant to bear all expenses connected j therewith. Alexander Mills, of Tuahu, wrote asking the Board to resume possession of 6000 acres of his run, provided that he was allowed the remaining 3250 at the south end of the bluck where he was at present residing. — It was decided to take no action in the matter.
