Hopes that Europeans would eventually withdraw f r om America and that iv the meantime they will not be permitted to extend territory in this hpmisphere were pasauges in the platform that were most loudly applauded. The silver men protest that they have been betrayed, and twenty-ono retired from the Convention, being hissed as they went. Mr McKinley received nomination on the first ballot by C 62 against 300 divided amongst, five other candidates. Mr Reed secured 84. The excitement during the balloting wrb at the highest pitch.
