Wellington, to-day.

The census shows thab the males exceed the females by about forty thousand. There are 3651 Chinamen and 34 Chinawomen, half of the number being in Otago. Wellington has more Chinese than any other borough. Selwyn is the most populous country with nearly 30,000, Wellington the most populous borough with 37,442. The North Island electorates average 12,548 each, and the South Island 10,312.

A peculiar assault case was heard in the Rangiora Magistrate's Court last Tuesday. Theinformant, Agnes Beattie, was attending divine service in the schoolroom one Sunday in May, and sat in the back seat but one. Defendant, Mr Atkinson, took up the collection. He passed her in coming down the aisle, and returning presented the bag to her. She was singing, and not taking notice of the bag defendant put it between the hymn book and her face. This having no result, he lifted it to her face and touched her on the chin with it. She then pushed defendant's arm away ; and as he moved away she saw him laughing. She had placed her offertory money on the table. After a considerable amount of evidence had been given, the Magistrate said the defendant had disgraced himself and abused the office he held, and fined him 5s and costs.
