VOLUNTEER ITEMS.

U ellin otoN; to-day. The annual inspection of the Wellington Volunteers by Major-General Whitmore was held on Saturday afternoon. There were 540 men on parade. In addressing the men Colonel Whitmore said they showed a marked improvement since the last inspection, and compared favorably with other battalions in the colony. In future the permanent force will be entirely recruited from the Volunteers, who must be under 25 years and have served three years in a Volunteer corps. Referring to the encampment to be held at New Plymouth next year, he said that he expected 4000 men to go under canvas. The Volunteer officers in the Wellington district will entertain Major-General Whitmore at a banquet on Wednesday evening in honor of his promotion. At the Volunteer inspection on Saturday it was intended to present the New Zealand Cross to Colonel McDonnell, but owing to the indisposition of that officer the ceremony had to be postponed.
