It is announced that the British Government have agreed to cede Port Hamilton to China on tho Chinese Government engaging not to allow any other power to annex that place. MELBOUIINE, To-day. The Legislative Assembly, which sat all last night, rose at three this afternoon. A compromise has been effected between the Government and Opposition, which is regarded as tantamount to a victory for the latter. AUCKLAND, Today. Proceedings are being taken against 1 Gibbons in connection with the fire at Gibbons' cooperage at Onehunga. Ostrich farming will shortly by started to the north of Auckland. 50 ostriches have been brought by a specially chartered ship from the Cape of Good Hope at a cost, including the export duty, of £12,000. | A fire, supposed to have been caused by a chemical explosion, occurred at Kempthorne, Prossor and Co.'s drug store. The fire was extinguished before much damage waa done. The fumes of muriatic and sulphuric acid seriously affected several of the firemen. NAPIER, To-day. T. F. Renwau was sentenced to 5 years for arson at Woodville.
