LATE AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

4, Sydney. In the Banco Court before His Honor Mr Justice Fawcekt and a jury of four, the action brought by Mr Alexander McWhinnie, horse importer, against the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, for £1,000 damages for breach of agreement to convey a horse in safety from Sydney to New Zealand, was concluded, the result being a verdict for the plaintiff. The plaintiff's case was that the defendants agreed to ship from Sydney and carry safely in the Wakatipu, to Port Chalmers, New Zealand, a horse named St. Vincent ; that they promised to use proper care in shipping the horse ; that they undertook to provide sufficient appliances and tackle for so doing ; that, instead of carrying out that agreement, they used improper and insufficient appliances ; and that while the horse was being shipped the tackle gave way, and the animal was thrown down and injured, and afterwards died in consequence of the injuries it sustained. The damages claimed were £1,000. Melbourne. Beach and his party received a splendid reception. The party consisting of Beach, Matterson, Kemp, Nelson, Deeble, and others, were driven after lunch in a drag to South Melbourne, where Mayor Wright received them at the Town Hall, where the healths of Beach and his friends were drunk with enthusiasm. The party then went to Albert Park, where thousands of people were assembled, and Beach addressing the audience from the boat shed balcony, said he was very pleased to return to Australia, which he thought would hold the championship for many years to come, if not in his person in Matterson's. Some of the other scullors also 3poke briefly, and all then went out for an exhibition spin in outriggers, Bench and Matterson making a pretended finish. Nelson fell out of his boat causing great laughter, and Sydney Edwards exhibited a number of feats, such as balancing in his boat, &c. After this the crowd rushed the enclosure, and the remainder of the programme collapsed.
