WELLINGTON, To-day.

The Minister of Public Works and the Native Minister leave for the South on Monday. The resignation of Mr Back, traffic manager of the Christchurch section of the New Zealand railways, has necessitated various changes among the officers of the Department. Mr Garstin, who has been in charge of the Wellington section during Mr Ashcroft's absence on leave, has been promoted to the position at Christchurch just vacated by Mr Back. Mr Carruthers, who has been 'temporarily in charge of the Locomotive Department, will probably be shifted to Wanganui to fill a similar position there. Mr Ashcroft has been offered charge of the Nelson section, and Mr RoNayne, of Greymouth, ia to take charge of the Wellington section on his arrival here in a few days. Some exceedingly severe injuries were sustained by a boy of the Ist class, named Berry, on H.M.S. Nelson yesterday. The lad was descending from the foretop and when about 10ft from the head he lost his footing and fell, striking the rigging on tho port side and falling into the picket boat which was hoisted up. The poor boy was attended to by the ship s surgeon, who ascertained that Berry had sustained some injuries to the skull, and in addition several of his ribs were broken, besides which one of his lungs was found to be punctured. Although necessarily in a precarious condition ifc ia hoped the sufierer will pull through. The Governor is expected to visit Auckland shortly. The telegram from Masterton yesterday [re shoep atealing was incorrect. The accused's name is James Ingley not Joseph Ingley. The Premier has published in pamphlet form his "Notes on the progress of New Zealand since 1865." AUCKLAND, To-day. Six wheat stacks have been destroyed by fire on the farm of Mr Smith at Mangere. The loss is £600. The origin of the fire is supposed to be a Bmoker throwing down a lighted match. _ DUNEDIN, To-day Mr Larnach addressing a meeting at Waikaia, promised ail the mining demands made conditional on the new loan being floated. The Tongariro has arrived from London and gone on to Wellington.
