The following appeared in ovr Second Edition of last issue :
WELLINGTON, This day. Colonel Whitmore sails south on defence business this afternoon. In consequence of the pacific nature of cables from Home in connection with the Russo-Afgban difficulty the expenditure on defences will be largely reduced. Win. Davis, a mulatto, was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the jewel robbery and was brought up this morning charged with rac.iving a watch knowing the same to have been stolen. The case was remanded until the 4th. CHRISTCHURCH, This day. At the R, M. Court Herbert Allendale alais John Williams was charged with burglariously entering the shop of L. Jcnesse, Wellington, on the night of May 26th, and stealing therefrom watches and jewellery to the value of £BOO. Part of the stolen property has been traced to <he possession of the prisoner, who was remanded till Thursday. DUNEDIN, This day.
A six-roomed bouse in Union-street, occupied by A. Magget, owned by A. J. C. Baber, was burned down this morning. The furnitnre is insured in Victoria for £l5O, and building in Norwich Union for £250. The fire was caused by clothes hanging before the fire igniting. HAWERA, This day.
A man named Richard Faville was arrested on Saturday night on a charge of arson at Oeo. Faville had been turned out of the hotel for being drunk and disorderly, and soon after the occupants of the bouse had gone to bed a large box containing some inflammable material was found to be burning close to the outside wall of the house (wooden). Faville was discovered crouching behind a fence near the hotel. He was brought up at Manaia this morning, and remandtd. AUCKLAND, This day.
Owen and Graham’s wholesale warehouse in Queen-street was discovered to be on fire at a quarter to eight this morning. The fire originated in the basement storey used as the packing department. The flames ascended up the left to the fourth storey which contains silks, fancy goods, &c , and this was completely gutted. The brigade got the fire under in half an hour, but not before the whole building was completely drenched with water. The insurances on stock and building are L 49,000. The loss is roughly estimated at L 14,000.
