SERVICEMEN ON LEAVE. The first two American servicemen to spend leave in Pahiatua, came up from. Masterton during New Year Week-end. A marine, Robert K. Smith, stayed at the Rutland Hotel, while a sailor, Seaman F. R. Smith, was the guest of Mr and Mrs Russ. Merrie. Seaman Smith appeared quite unexpectedly at the New Year Ball and was promptly made a guest of tho Entertainers for the evening. Tn (reply, ‘Seaman Smith said, “Aw shucks. 1 guess you New Zealanders at© just too kind to us fellows, you know.” On Sunday. Russ showed him our parks, where the absence of cedar and maple was offset by the visitor's interest in our native foliage; The Americans have discovered that just as eating and drinking customs van- from state to state in the U.S.A., such is a beverage with a body t*> be obtained in Pahiatua which to them is another interesting valley in a strange but hospitable land.
