A REVIEW OF THE WAR NEWS The week-end. news has provided a highlight of a sensational nature in the assassination of Admiral JDariaa in North Africa. Some British opin- ; ion inclines to the belie! that the Admiral's death will complicate the position of the French in this theatre o! war but consequent upon the appointment of General Girraud as i military chief, there are said to be j little signs of any unrest. Russia again brightens the headlines with a speeding-up of the mighty advance on the Ron front and if anything, the general outlook is much darker for the Nazi hordes. Confirmation of this opinion comes from Rr. Goebbcls whose stark warning to tne German nation is a sign of the disquiet reflected at the al,_ halted offensive of vhe Soviet. Nothing striking is to be found in the news from either 'Tunisia or Libya where the Allies still hold ‘die initiative and in both areas the Hun is on the del endive. The Solomons and New Guinea provtide little intelligence of moment, the mopping up operations hi Papua apparently proving slow and uninspiring with the Japanese detei- ‘ mined to hold out to the bitter end
