XMAS RAIL TRAFFIC

FREIGHT ACCUMULATES IN YARDS 1 ahiatua railway stall had a busy Christmas. Only one special passenger train ran on Xmas Eve but wartime necessity caused freight traffic to be maintained at a high level. One surprisingly good feature of holiday traffic was the express trains maintaining schedule despite heavy bookings. The southbound Wairarapa express on Xmas Eve was less than 15 minutes behind time despite bad connections at Palmerston and Woodville. Railbars were booked out on - almost every run and a few passengers were disappointed. A heavy freight train was run after the railcar on Sunday night and many loaded wagons are awaiting clearance at Pahiatua This was a Xmas when freight traffic eclipsed passenger booking as a result of the necessity for permits to travel.
