BIRD POACHERS
JAPANESE CRUELTY. In May, 1909. twenty-three Japanese poachers landed on Laysan Island, which lies between Midway Island and Hawaii, to plunder the bird life in the interests of the millinery and similar trades, states a writer in Forest aaid Bird. The wings of more than 300,000 birds were cut off, aud it was proved that the jx/aohers, who, incidentally, were apprehended by a U.S. revenue cutter, cut the wings from living birds, which wer© left to bleed to death, and starved many others to death so that it would be easier to cure their skins. The birds of Midway Island were treated in a similar manner.
