SUPPORT FOR GOVERNMENT
CANTERBURY COMMUNISTS The Canterbury district committee of the Communist Party of New' Zealand has decided to support the Government candidate in the byelection for the Christchurch East seat. Its resolution on the subject states: “We record the fact that other parties have rejected our proposal to refrain from standing candidates in opposition to the Government. which has shouldered and must continue to shoulder the responsibility for directing the war effort. This revival of sectarian conflict can only hinder the w T a.r effort and hence the Communist Party will support the Government candidate in the election. We do this not because we approve of all aspects of the Government policy, but because we feel that improvements should be fought for bv non-sectar-ian methods, and because of our conviction that national unity is absolutely essential for a speedy victory over Fascism. 7 ’
