DYNAMITE EXPLOSION.
MINERS TERRIBLE DEATH. Electric Telegraph—Tress Association HOKITIKA,, Last Night. Particulars of the tragedy at the Tucker Fiat tunnel works this morning show that deceased, Robert Thompson Gallon, aged 39, a married man with two children, who was engaged on the tunnel, started on the shift at midnight with a. mate. Alter crib at 6 a.ill. the latter entered the tunnel, expecting Gallon to follow in a quarter of an hour. Instead, he heard an, explosion that shook the tunnel and found the crib tent, which contained 121 b of dynamite and a dozen detonators, molished. The tram rails and, earth were broken, and the body of deceased was terribly mutilated. I'he mate cannot account for the explosion as the usual course followed was not to prepare the charge until 7.30, shortly before the shift ended, when a special visit to the tent was made to briiifj explosives Deceased was* an exceedingly careful man in this regnsd. The inquest was opened and adjourned.
