The August number of “West” Ma gazine is brimful of action, hav- . ing such contributors as: Ray Palmer Tracy, “The Meath Ranch” (where Pokeasy Jones goes in for the like-curcs-like method) • Bennett Foster, “Johnny Speaks Spanish” ; Allan K. Echols, “Gunsmoke of Sierra Madre” ; Guy Weadiek, Anthony Rudd, James P. Olsen and Marry Sinclair Mrago. 1 ‘Short Stories” for August has a complete novel, “G-Heat,” by Robert M. Rhode; a fine tale by Charles Tenney Jackson (wherein three Caribbean adventurers are pledged to keep a secret) and equally good fiction from the pens of Ray ATilln oil and, Albert Richard Wetjen and other noted writers. Somerset Maugham gives readers “The Ant and the Grasshopper” in the August number of The Strand Magazine. Then there is “The Bishop’s Amulet” (by Edgar Jepson and Robert Eustace), “Crime on the 8.36 (by Philip Wylie), “In Safe Hands” (by Vere Dunne) and Albert Richard Wetjen’s stirring yarn, “A Salute for a Sailor.” These stories cover a wide range of fancy and should appear to all types of readers. The ever-popular “Strand Magazine for September features a grand story by G. K. Chesterton in which the popular fiction hero c 1 Father Brown” makes his reappearance. Sir Arthur Willett describes the work of our diplomatic service abroad in his fine article, “The King’s Messenger,” and in addition to these art* contributions from such eminent authors as Menis Mackail, E.
