SPORT OF KINGS.

RACING AFFAIRS. PAHIATUA CLUB MEETS. \ meeting fit the committee of the Pahiatua Pacing Club was held in Messrs Smith and McSherry s premises last night, there being present: Messrs D. Kelly (chairman), F. Britland. S. T. Tinney, A. Bieknell, C. Job risk i, A. Bentley, F. C. Llovd, C. Hodgins, C. Connell, E. L. Harvey, R. J. Smith, E. Lett and the secretary (Air J. G. Swaiiison). It was decided to appoint Air C. V. J>ay, of Palmerston North, to 1 Ull the totalisator at the next meeting on March 31 and April 1. Alter a long discussion it was agreed to take a vote on the question of having an indicator totalisator at the meeting, and the subsequent voting was even —six cast for each—the chairman finally giving his casting vote in favour of installing an indicator, which will tell at a glance the dividend paid by each horse. INCREASE IN STAKE AIONEY. Air R. J. Smith referred to the support accorded the club by owners and trainers in the past, and was of the opinion that the club should make an endeavour to increase the stakes from last year, a view which was held by many others present Air Arthur Bentley then moved that the club make an all-round increase of £l<) per race. The chairman pointed out that the club had to face a very heavy expenditure in repairing the stand, whereon Air Smith was entirely dependent on the support of the horse owners and trainers. Air Lloyd then seconded the motion.

At this juncture Air Smith moved that the increase be £3OO or £2O per race, pointing out that such a sum would not hurt the club either way, and that the prices of farming commodities appeared to justify such a step. Air E. L< 'tt thought some provision should be made for a rainy day and that the club should proceed warily. He would oppose such an increase.

All* Bentley having said he would withdraw his proposal if any higher increase was suggested, accordingly did so, and the motion of Afr Smith’s for a £3OO increase was then put and lost by six tq five.

Messrs Harvey and Connell then moved that the increase be £lO per race and this was carried by a similar majority After a long discussion, the programme used last year was adopted for the ensuing fixture, and nominations will close with the secretary on Friday, March 13.

Fiee accommodation will be provided for the horses again as was done last year. The £lO increase in stakes will be added to the first money in each event, it being held that the second and third winnings last year wore lather out of proportion to the* first money .paid out. A meeting of stewards will )>e heTd on the course on Sunday week and will deal with work occasioned as a result of the storm on Sunday last.
