MILK GRADING SCHEME.
CRITICISM AT PAP AT AW A. “I never remember a time when the dairy industry was more confused about regulations,” stated M*r J. G. Brechin, secretary of the Papatawa Dairy Company, at the annual meeting of shareholders on Saturday. “If the milk grading regulations, which are voluminous, are enforced, there will be more unnecessary expense for farmers, 7 ’ he added. “It will cost the Papatawa company alone about £3O. The curd test, which the Department of Agriculture demands, conveys a lot to the factory manager, but very little to the suvplier. The department wants us to use both at the same time. This is quite unnecessary, and, in my opinion, is just pig-headedness on the. part of the department. The department is opposed by responsible factory managers and scientists, and the Minister is in a quandary.” “As you are aware the requests of the deputation which waited on the Minister to convey the resolution passed at tlie N.D.A. conference lias had no effect in amending the regulations to provide for the use of either one of /the three tests for grading milk for cheese-mak-ing,” stated a letter from the Federation of Taranaki Co-operative Dairy Factories. “The companies here who have been pressing for this reform have decided that the only course now open is to present a petition to Parliament. We are preparing this petition, and will shortly forward it so that as many signatures as possible can be obtained. W e have not ceased our efforts to have the regulations amended . 7 7 The Bush Dairy Companies 7 Asadvised that a joint meeting of dairy factory directors from the members of the association, and also tlie Southern Hawke’s Bay Association, would be held in Woodville on Friday to discuss milk grading and the question of tests. The member for the district, Hon. E. A. Ransom, M.P., was being invited to attend.
