OPOTIKI BOROUGH. GOODS SOLD TO COUNCIL. Electric Telegraph—l-rcss Assocm-nou OPOTIKI, August 16. Aff airs • in. connection with the Opotiki Borough Council have taken a new turn. As the outcome of a recent audit of the Borough Council books by the Government auditors it has been pointed out that Mr S. Slialfoon, who is the leader of the majority of councillors who are endeavouring to make drastic reductions in the borough staff, committed a technical breach of the Municipal Domains Act in that he had supplied in 1932 goods to the value of £lO 18s 5d to the Domain Board, whereas the Act provides that a councillor shall not supply another more than £8 worth of goods in one year or £5 worth of goods at any one time.
It is understood that there are complicated points in connection with the transaction, and it is not known whether or not Mr Slialfoon will lose his seat on the council. The matter is causing intense excitement, as a by-election would doubtless show whether the electors favour the policy of the council.
