Pike, rider of Phar ‘Lap in the Futurity Stakes, said the lior.se ran the greatest race of his career and proved himself the best horse in the world to win in his presentcondition. Phar Lap was last before the five furlongs post was reached. Pike has now ridden three Futurity winners. Holdfast was second in the fifth division of the Hawkesburn Handicap. which was won by Spanish Galleon, who was ridden by Ashley Reed. The first and second horses in the Futurity .Stakes were bred in New Zealand. EVENTS AT CAULFIELD. MELBOURNE. February 21. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club races were held at Caulfield in cold, bleak weather. After heavy rain the track was holding. Results: AVoodcliffe Handicap: Veilmoncl, 8.6 (McCarten) 1; Cervantes, 7.2 (Percival) 2; El Rev. 8.12 (Duncan) 3. Thirteen started, including Prince Don and lnduna. Won by a .length and a. half ; a length and a quarter between second and third. Time 2.221. Caulfield Futurity Stakes: Phar Lap, 10.3 (Pike) i ; Mystic Peak. 10.2 (A. Reed) 2; Taurus, 8.12 (Selby) 3. The other starters were Wise Force, Greenline, Mollison. Brazen Face. The Doctor’s Orders, AVaterline and Lightstead, Although last to get away, Phar Lap gradually improved his position and made a great run on the outside of the field. AVhen nearing the home turn, the champion wan forced further out when Taurus hung out. Mystic Peak then began to look dangerous on the rails, hilt in a wonderful finish Phar Lap was ridden right out and iust beat Mystic Peak by a neck. Taurus was a length away, third. Mollison was fourth. Then came Greenline, Waterline and AVise Force. Time 1.27 J. Phar Lap thus places himself at the head of Australian and New Zealand stake winners and iu actually tenth on the world’s list of winners. Pike said that Phar Lap was not yet at the top of his form, otherwise he would have won more easily.

Other twiners to arrive were W. W oods, with Chopin, and A. C. Plummer with Mahora. •I. E. Lyford has four horses, Mountain Heath, Sabatini. Rory Mor and Nimble at W. H. Gaisford’s stables in McLean Street and is evidently' going to stay in Woodvilie for some time for be has taken a house and his family arrived on Saturday. W. J. King’s horses, Acmil.
